FigureNerd is built by two founding partners with 70+ combined years of direct field experience. One partner brings 40+ years in CEO operations, small-business management, real estate, asset protection, portfolio building, and personal finance. The other is an HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical industry legend whose reputation precedes him. He brings 30+ years in HVAC-R, mechanical systems, construction, and trades.

Every FigureNerd calculator goes through extensive industry-specific investigative research. We cross-reference our methodology against the highest-authority expert data available in each field, document our sources, and benchmark against the industry's best. Then we push to do it better. Each calculator represents real time, real research, and real field experience: not generic formulas pulled from a textbook.

How we build every calculator

Our methodology

Every FigureNerd calculator follows a four-layer methodology. We read the top competitor tools for each topic, identify where they get it wrong, pull the authoritative expert data (IRS publications, ACCA Manual J, ASHRAE standards, FHFA conforming limits, EPA guidance), and then build the formula against verified ground-truth values. No textbook defaults. No generic national averages applied to situations where they don't apply.

Domain-sensitive values -- like HVAC tonnage for a Zone 6 climate, or safe harbor underpayment thresholds for 1099 filers -- are reviewed by the relevant partner before the calculator ships. We name our sources on every calculator page. We link to the primary source. We update when regulations change.

Our Editorial Standards

Every calculator on FigureNerd is researched, written, and reviewed by a small editorial team with a single non-negotiable standard: the math has to be right, and the explanation has to make sense to a real person without a degree in the field. Our HVAC and mechanical content goes through hands-on expert review from someone who has done the installs, not just read the specs. Our tax and small-business content is reviewed against current IRS publications, not prior-year guesses. Our real estate and asset protection content is cross-referenced against the authoritative frameworks that operators actually use.

Our methodology is built in four layers: (1) identify the authoritative primary source (IRS forms, ACCA Manual J, ASHRAE standards, ENERGY STAR ratings, EPA guidance), (2) verify formulas against that source before building, (3) have the domain-relevant founding partner review results in the specific context the tool covers (not a national average applied blindly), and (4) document every source on the calculator page so you can check our work yourself. We update calculators when regulations or standards change. If you spot something off, the correction form is on every page.

FigureNerd calculators are designed to give you a number you can actually act on, not a ballpark that leaves you back where you started. That means qualified language where the inputs vary by situation, named sources where an expert would cite one, and plain English throughout. No jargon without a definition. No formula without a source. No claim without a receipt. Questions about how a specific calculator was built? The Methodology page walks through the full four-layer process and links every primary source we use.
