Buy one extra box since screws are inexpensive and running out mid-hang is a job-site emergency.

How much joint compound do I need?

For a standard three-coat finish (tape coat, second coat, finish coat), budget one 4.5-gallon bucket of all-purpose joint compound per 200 square feet of finished drywall surface. Smooth walls with minimal texture use slightly less. Skip-trowel or heavy knockdown texture uses more. Pre-mixed compound loses roughly 20 percent volume to water evaporation as it dries, so do not be surprised when the buckets run down faster than the square footage suggests.

Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?

4x8 sheets (32 sq ft each) are the default for most residential rooms. 4x12 sheets (48 sq ft each) reduce the number of horizontal joints on 9-foot and taller walls, which means less taping and a cleaner finish. The tradeoff is weight and handling: a 4x12 half-inch sheet weighs about 88 pounds versus 57 pounds for a 4x8. If your ceiling height is 9 feet or higher and you have help on the lift, 4x12 is worth considering.

What is the standard drywall door deduction?

The RSMeans standard is 21 square feet per interior door opening (approximately 3 feet wide by 7 feet tall). Some contractors deduct nothing for small openings and add the saved material to the waste allowance. We follow the RSMeans 21 sq ft deduction because it produces accurate results on jobs where door count is high. For oversized or custom doors, measure the actual rough opening width times height and enter that in the custom override if needed.

The Formula This Calculator Uses

This calculator follows the RSMeans (Gordian) industry-standard formula, which is the same method used by professional estimators on residential and light commercial jobs.

Gross area: (2 x ceiling height x (length + width)) + (length x width) -- this covers all four walls plus the ceiling.
Door deduction: 21 sq ft per door (standard 3x7 rough opening).
Window deduction: 15 sq ft per standard window (3x5 rough opening average).
Sheet count: divide net area by sheet size (32 or 48 sq ft), round up to the next whole sheet.
Waste factor: multiply the whole-sheet count by your chosen waste factor, then round up again.

Why the Waste Factor Matters

Drywall cuts are not returnable after opening. Running short mid-project costs you a trip and possibly a full day of waiting on delivery. Running 5 percent over means you have corner patches and closet repairs covered for years. The 10 percent standard is the floor, not a target to beat.

Use 12 percent if the room has angled walls, multiple interior closets, or window count above four. Use 15 percent if the room has vaulted ceilings, archways, or any non-rectangular geometry.

4x8 vs 4x12: When Does 4x12 Make Sense?

4x12 sheets cut horizontal joints out of a 9-foot wall. That means less taping, less mud, and a flatter finish. The downside: a 4x12 half-inch sheet weighs roughly 88 pounds. You need a second person on the lift or a proper deadman tool for the ceiling hang. For 8-foot ceilings, 4x8 sheets are almost always the better call. For 9-foot-plus, the 4x12 labor savings often justify the handling challenge.

Screws and Compound: The Full Order List

The calculator estimates screws at one 1-pound box per 180 sq ft (trade standard at 16-inch stud spacing, 32 screws per 4x8 sheet). A standard 1-pound box holds roughly 200 coarse-thread 1-5/8-inch drywall screws, which covers about 6 sheets before you run out. Buy one extra box. Screws are inexpensive and running short mid-hang is a job-site emergency.

Joint compound is estimated at one 4.5-gallon bucket per 200 sq ft. This covers the tape coat, second fill coat, and finish skim for Level 4 finish. If you are targeting Level 5 (skim entire surface), add 25 percent to the compound estimate.
